How to Decorate:

  1. Outline and flood the heart using red royal icing. Tip: Before filling and to minimize concaved icing, scribble some icing near the center of the heart and then begin flood filling from the outside to center.
  2. Allow it to set fully—An hour or so will work but, overnight is best!
  3. Using a black #1 tip (or edible marker), pipe three charmingly imperfect letters: A, B, and C. Feel free to get playful—the more “first-grade handwriting,” the better!

📸 Pro Tip: These are perfect for lunchbox treats or teacher appreciation gifts.

✏️ Design #2: Pencil-Wrapped Heart Cookie (Mid-to-Advanced)

This one’s a showstopper! Inspired by a special request from my grandchild, this cookie wraps a classic #2 pencil around the curves of a heart—complete with 3D details and a little surprise in the center!

What You’ll Need:

  • Heart-shaped cookie
  • White royal icing (outline: #1 tip, flood: #3 tip)
  • Yellow, pink, brown, and black royal icing (all medium-flood consistency)
  • Toothpick or scribe tool

How to Decorate:

  1. Start by outlining the heart in white with a #1 tip.
  2. Using a #3 tip, scribble icing into the center of the heart first (this helps prevent concaving!) and flood around the outline. Let it set.
  3. Once dry, outline and flood a yellow pencil shape that wraps around about ¾ of the heart, ending above the tip. You want space to add the writing tip and pencil eraser.
    • Keep the yellow icing slightly thicker than typical flood to give that puffy, dimensional pencil look.
  4. After that sets, add the details:
    • black metal band
    • Pink eraser
    • Brown exposed wood
    • Black pencil tip
  5. Using a black #1 tip, pipe fine pencil lines to add depth and realism.
  6. In the center of the heart, create a pink heart using two dots of icing joined at the bottom point with icing or a scribe tool.

💡 Note: The heart’s puffiness and precision come from drying in stages—don’t rush this one!

🧁 Decorating Tips & Tricks:

  • Slightly thicker yellow icing = puffier pencil = more dimension!
  • Scribble icing in the center of your flood first to help prevent sunken cookies.
  • Use a scribe or toothpick to nudge icing into corners or fix tiny gaps.
  • Add a name instead of the pink heart, “Welcome Back,” or even a teacher’s initials for a personal touch!
