🖍️Bright, Fun & Full of Color
What better way to celebrate the start of a new school year than with a set of colorful crayon cookies? These back-to-school sugar cookies are playful, simple to decorate, and perfect for beginners and those ready to level up.
In this post, I’m sharing two crayon cookie designs—one beginner-friendly and one a little more advanced. Grab your icing bags, roll out your dough, and let’s decorate outside the lines!
💙 Crayon Cookie #1: Blue Crayon (Beginner-Friendly)
If you’re looking for a quick, easy, and totally charming design—this bright blue crayon is the one to start with. The design is simple but delivers all the nostalgic vibes of a fresh box of crayons!

🎨 What You’ll Need:
- Crayon-shaped cookie cutter
- Baked and cooled sugar cookies
- Royal icing in both outline & flood consistency:
- Blue
- Black
- White
- Tips: #1 (outline), #3 (flood)
- Piping bags
📝 Decorating Instructions
1. Outline & Flood the Crayon:
Start by outlining the entire crayon shape in blue using a #1 tip.
Then flood the cookie using your blue flood icing. Pro tip:
Scribble a bit of icing into the center first before filling in from the edges—this helps prevent a sunken center!
Set the cookie aside to dry for at least 1 hour (or longer if you can wait!).
2. Add Tip Detail:
Once dry, pipe a rounded-corner rectangle near the top of the crayon with blue outline icing, then flood. This mimics the area above the tip on real crayons.
3. Add the Black Wrapper Bands:
- Outline and flood a black rectangle a short distance below the blue tip.
- Repeat again above the crayon’s base, creating two black bands like a traditional wrapper.

4. Add the Label:
In the center, between the two black bands, pipe a long oval with black icing and let it set.
Once dry, use white outline icing to write the word “Blue” across the label.
✏️ Keep the lettering a little wobbly and childlike—it adds personality and schoolhouse charm! You’ll notice that I had to add a small black dot to define the “e” in blue.

💖 Crayon Cookie #2: Pink Crayon with Hearts (Intermediate)
This pretty-in-pink crayon has a little extra flair—think fun Valentine’s energy meets school supplies. We’ll break it into clean sections and finish it off with a sweet heart designs.

🧁 What You’ll Need:
- Crayon cookie cutter
- Royal icing in:
- Bright Pink (outline & flood)
- Black (outline & flood)
- White (outline)
- Piping bags + #1 & #3 tips
📝 How to Decorate:
1. Outline the Two Black Wrapper Bands:
Start by outlining and flooding two black bands, one near the top and one near the bottom of the crayon.
I slightly overfilled mine to get that puffed, dimensional look.
Let these black areas dry before moving on, especially if you want to avoid color bleeding into the pink icing.

2. Outline & Flood the Pink Sections:
Once the black icing has set, begin carefully outlining the four pink sections—between and above/below the black bands, as well as the crayon tip.
🩷 Start at the bottom and work upward. Allow the section next to the tip to set before outlining and filling the tip itself.
Careful outlining near the black edges helps keep that beautiful color separation clean and crisp.
💖 3. Add the Wrapper Details (The Finishing Touches!)
Once your icing has set, it’s time to add the final elements that really make this crayon come to life.
Black Wrapper Accents:
- Use black outline consistency icing with a #1 tip (or fine piping cut).
- Add three thin horizontal lines across each black band—just like the ones you’d see on a real crayon wrapper.

White Heart with Mini Pink Hearts:
- In the center of the crayon (between the black bands), pipe a white heart with outline + flood consistency icing.
- While the white heart is still wet:
- Add three tiny pink dots spaced slightly apart inside the heart.
- Use your scribe tool to drag a line through all three dots, starting at the top and pulling down to the point—this creates three tiny hearts within the white one.
💡 Tip: Wipe your scribe between each stroke if needed, and work quickly while the icing is still fluid.
Feel free to get creative—these can be little drops pulled into heart shapes or tiny piped hearts for more detail.

These crayon cookies are so much fun to make and customize. Use any color you’d like to match your school, your favorite student, or even a whole rainbow of crayons!
The blue design is great for a fast project or decorating with kids. The pink design adds just the right amount of challenge and personality.
However you decorate them, remember: cookies don’t have to be perfect to be precious. A little wiggle in your lines or tilt in your hearts just makes them that much more special.
