Notebook Paper Sugar Cookies
📓Cute, Easy, & Classroom-Ready!
Notebook Paper Sugar Cookies add a simple flare to back-to-school cookies. Let’s be honest—back-to-school season is full of lists, labels, and maybe a few lunchbox battles… but it’s also the perfect time to whip up something sweetly symbolic to celebrate the start of a brand-new school year.
These Notebook Paper Cookies are as beginner-friendly as it gets, but still adorable enough to steal the show at Meet-the-Teacher night or tuck inside a first-day-of-school treat bag. Best of all? You only need three icing colors, one fun cookie cutter, and a little creative flair to make them your own.
💡 A Creative Cookie Twist
Instead of using a standard rectangle or square cutter for these notebook cookies, I decided to think outside the lunchbox and use a wavy flag-shaped cookie cutter instead. The result? A fun cookie that looks like a fluttery piece of notepaper blowing across the playground. 📄💨
That’s the magic of cookie decorating—your cutter doesn’t always have to do what it says on the package! Let your creativity guide the way. ✨

✏️ What You’ll Need:

📝 Step-by-Step Decorating Instructions
1. Outline & Flood
- Start by outlining the entire cookie in white royal icing, using a #1 tip or similar size.
- Before flood filling, scribble a bit of icing into the center, then flood around the edges and work your way in. This trick helps prevent that frustrating icing dip in the middle!
- Smooth out with a scribe if needed.
- Gently transfer the cookie to a drying rack using a thin metal spatula.
- Let dry for at least 1 hour—more if you plan to add details right on top.
2. Add the Notepaper Lines
Use a small piping tip or a super-fine bag cut (about the size of a #1 tip).
🔴 Red Line
- Pipe a thin vertical red line down the left side of the cookie to represent the margin line.
- Tip: Lightly press the piping tip down to the surface, then pull slightly up while gently squeezing. This helps avoid a clumpy blob at the start.

🔵 Blue Lines
- Add evenly spaced horizontal blue lines across the cookie from left to right.
- Wipe your tip between lines if icing starts to drag or spread.
- You can stop here and let it dry—or move straight into the text.
3. Personalize with a Sweet Message
This is where the fun begins! Once your lines have set, it’s time to turn your notepaper into a mini message board.

💖 Design #2: Pink Heart + “School”
- Using pink icing, pipe two small to large dots side by side, then pull them into a point to form a heart shape.
- Below the heart, pipe the word “School” using black outline icing.
- (Real talk? “School” is a bit long for a cookie this size. I made it work, but if I did it again, I might choose a shorter word like “Book” or “Read.”)
🧁 Decorating Notes & Encouragement:
- Don’t worry about perfectly spaced lines—real notebook paper has its quirks, and yours can too.
- These cookies are a great beginner project for kids or first-time decorators.
- Want to make a whole batch for a school event? Use a variety of messages: “A+,” “Hi!”, “Read,” “You Got This!”
