Waves of Red, White and Blue

Waves of Red White & Blue. A patriotic wavy flag sugar cookie. Decorated to celebrate 4th of July.

Waves of Red White and Blue is a breath taking site. But, the best kind of flag is the one you can eat, right? Today, I’m sharing my take on a wavy 4th of July flag sugar cookie—a sweet little design that captures all the patriotic flair of Old Glory, with a bit of icing artistry (and sparkle, of course).

This cookie design uses a wavy flag cutter, and I leaned into that flowing motion by loosening my icing style just a smidge. Think gently swooping lines and soft curves—not perfection, but purpose. Just like a flag caught in a summer breeze.

Decorating Notes:

  • I started by outlining the blue section in a not-so-perfect block (on purpose!), then flood filled it and let it set for about 10 minutes.
  • Next came the imperfect white stripes, then the red, letting each one dry slightly before adding the next. This helps keep the colors crisp and distinct.
  • I finished by adding small outlines to each section in their matching color for a little extra pop and dimension.
  • A few dots of blue icing and some carefully placed star sprinkles finish the look. (Hello, trusty tweezers!)

If you don’t have a flag-shaped cutter, no worries at all! A simple rectangle cookie will do the trick:

  • Leave negative space around your design and outline the flag directly on the cookie. Got to love that negative space it just makes the design pop.
  • Or fill the rectangle with a base color, let it set, and build your flag design on top.
  • For a more intermediate look, outline and fill each flag section separately (blue, white stripes, then red), allowing for dry time in between.

I always color and thin my royal icing the night before decorating—this gives the colors time to develop and lets the consistency settle. I also keep extra thick icing on hand in case the flood icing thins out a bit by decorating time.

It’s all about flexibility, ease, and making room for those little imperfections that make handmade cookies so sweetly unique.
