Whether you’re an intermediate cookie decorator or just starting out, this step-by-step guide will walk you through the process — with helpful tips to make it easier and tastier. They’re fun to make, easy to personalize, and guaranteed to be a crowd-pleaser!

🍪 A Sweet Surprise for the Team

These cookies were made for a baseball team celebration — and let’s just say, they stole the show. When handed out, players excitedly showed their cookies to parents before even taking a bite. Coaches and families were impressed by the attention to detail, and the overall presentation was a hit. They weren’t just cookies… they were a moment.

🧁 What You’ll Need:

  • 3″ Round sugar cookies (baked and cooled) using quality cookie cutters (no affiliation)
  • Royal icing (base recipe [link to your recipe])
  • Food coloring: red, white, and a third color for personalization
  • Edible food-grade marker (optional)
  • Piping tips: #1 for outline, #3 for flood
  • Piping bags
  • Clear cellophane bags (Sized to fit a 3” cookie)
  • Twist ties or ribbon
  • Printable label stickers (optional)

⚙️ Decorating: Intermediate to Advanced Design

This sugar cookie design gives that three-dimensional stitched baseball look that really makes the cookie pop.

Step-by-Step:

  1. Scribe the Cookie
Use your round cookie cutter to gently mark two half circles on the cookie, creating three segments for your baseball design.
  2. Flood the Center
Outline and flood fill the center segment first using white royal icing. Let it dry slightly.
  3. Add the Sides
Outline and flood each outer side, one at a time, allowing each to dry slightly before moving on. This prevents icing from blending together and keeps the sections clean and dimensional.
  4. Add Stitching
Use red royal icing and a #1 tip to pipe small “V” shapes along the curved edges of the baseball. These should sit just over the “seams” between the icing sections, mimicking real baseball stitching.
  5. Personalize It
Add a player’s name and jersey number using one of the options below.

💡 Want an Easier Option? (Beginner-Friendly Tip)
Step-by-step simplified design:

  • Outline and full flood in one go (allow to dry)
  • Optional section guides with marker or dusting powder
  • Red icing for stitching only (outline consistency)
  • Use a red marker instead of icing for stitching

✍️ Personalization Tips

You’ve got options — and none of them require perfect handwriting.

  • Beginner-Friendly Method:
Use a fine-tip edible marker to lightly write the name and number on the dried cookie.
Then, pipe over it with outline icing using tip #1 for a clean, polished look.
  • Advanced Option:
Freehand the name and number directly with a piping bag. Script or print — whatever fits your vibe.

You can also keep it simple by adding just the number or initials.

🎨 Icing Prep Tips

Here’s where the magic begins — and yes, it takes a little planning.

What’s included:

  • Mix one batch of Royal Icing
  • Divide and color it: white (base), red (stitching), and an optional third color
  • Thin each color to the proper consistency:
    • Outline consistency (thicker)
    • Flood consistency (thinner)

💡 Pro Tip: Use the 2-Bag Method

For each color, prep two bags:

  • One filled with outline icing
  • One filled with flood icing

Then, instead of putting a tip on every single bag, use my 2-bag system:

  • Bag 1: Holds the icing (no tip)
  • Bag 2: Holds the tip and stays empty

Just nest the icing bag inside the tip bag. It’s clean, efficient, and you only need one tip per consistency. I used #1 for outlining and #3 for flood.

Other Options

  • Tipless bags
  • Writer or icing bottles with tips

⏳ Time Commitment: Plan for 8 Hours

That doesn’t mean you’ll be working non-stop — It can be divided into two days, but here’s what you’ll need to allow time for:

TaskApprox. Time
Mixing, Chilling, Baking & cooling cookies1–1.5 hours
Mixing, thinning, coloring icing30–60 mins
Decorating (with dry time between steps)2–3 hours
Sticker design (optional)30 mins
Packaging & presentation30–60 mins

💡 Drying time between icing steps is crucial. It helps prevent colors from bleeding and keeps your lines clean. Don’t rush the process — the results are worth it.

🍦 Flavor Twist: Cream Cheese Icing Hack

If your icing needs to stay bright white (like these baseballs!) add a few drops of AmeriColor 126 Bright White and skip the dark vanilla extract. I was out of my go-to clear vanilla, so I substituted cream cheese extract — and WOW. Instant flavor upgrade!

➡️ My recipe calls for 1 teaspoons of vanilla, use 2 teaspoons of cream cheese extract instead.
It adds a smooth, tangy flavor that pairs beautifully with the sugar cookie base.

🎁 Packaging & Presentation

Want to make your cookies look as special as they taste? Try these ideas:

  • Clear Bags + Twist Ties
Package each cookie in a cellophane bag, sealed with a silver twist tie (bonus points if it matches team colors!).
  • Custom Sticker
    I created a 3″ x 1.5” label with a baseball icon and the phrase:
“Thanks for making my day extra awesome! Let’s knock it outta the park!!”
For this packaging the sticker was placed on the back side and is not shown here.
  • Presentation Ideas:
    • Line a basket with a baseball napkin or dish towel
    • Fill a Tupperware container and top with a thank-you card
    • Use a mini baseball backpack or string bag for gifting
    • Decorate a shoebox like a dugout and stack the cookies inside!
