Easy 4th of July Fireworks Sugar Cookies
Quick, Fun, and Full of Sparkle!
Easy 4th of July Fireworks Sugar Cookies that are fast, fun, and fabulously festive cookie design for the 4th of July? These Fireworks Sugar Cookies were such a joy to make—zero stress, maximum sparkle, and just enough dimension to really pop (pun totally intended 😉). They’re perfect for beginners or anyone looking for a quick win with big impact.
🧁 What You’ll Need:
- 4th of July themed cookie cutters or not
- Sugar cookies, baked and cooled and we have a delicious recipe.
- Royal icing in red, white, and blue here’s our base royal icing recipe.
- Tipless piping bags or good ole piping bags and tips, both work 🙂
- Star sprinkles (I used two different kinds—because ✨drama✨)
- Scribe tool (optional for icing touch-ups)

🎨 A Note on Coloring the Icing
Getting that bold flag red and blue? It takes a little planning but it’s so worth it. Here’s my method:
- Royal Blue Icing: I start with a royal blue base and add just one drop of navy blue to deepen it to that true flag blue.
- Red Icing: A base of bright red + a drop of maroon makes all the difference—no more pinkish tones!
- I always color my icing the night before to give those pigments time to develop and deepen. It’s like magic overnight ✨ making the icing sparkle!

🍪 Decorating Steps
- Flood your cookies—two with white icing, one with red or one each in red, white and blue
- Let the base set for 10–15 minutes. We’re not doing wet-on-wet here—we want that lovely, layered dimension!
- Drizzle contrasting colors over the surface. I went freeform here—no pattern, just fun!
- Drop on star sprinkles while the drizzle is still soft for that 3D, boom-boom-bam effect.
- Let dry fully—and try not to squeal at how cute they are.

🧪 Real Talk: Tools & Tips
- I tried using silicone baking mats for these… and regret it. The cookies spread slightly and baked up faster than usual. I’m going back to good ol’ parchment paper, thank you very much!
- Tipless piping bags: I’m still hunting for “the one.” The ones I used here didn’t give me even flow—it was a bit wiggly. The dream of fewer tips to wash is alive though, so testing shall continue!
A quick video
I have been cutting, baking and decorating cooks for many, many, many, did I say many :), years. Videoing and editing the process…not so much. “I was so focused on the cookie that I forgot to keep the camera and hand angle in mind—classic multitasking mishap! My hand decided to photobomb this one, but you’ll still see the drizzles come together! But hey, the technique is simple and the result is still fireworks-level fun.”
Just being totally transparent here…
In most of my videos, you’ll notice my hand isn’t always in the best filming position. The right angle can be a little tricky, awkward, not my go-to hand position, and to be honest, I’m often decorating blindly—relying on feel more than sight. It’s not picture-perfect, but it’s real, and I hope it shows you that cookie decorating doesn’t have to be flawless to be fun, beautiful and tasty. 🥰
