of potential. 💛
These heart-shaped sugar cookies are
ready for some red, white, and blue magic.
Design A: Stars & Sparkles in a Simplified Flag
This first version is ideal for beginners—or anyone who just wants to keep things simple, sweet, and stress-free. The left side of the heart is filled with bright royal blue icing, sloping down from the top arch. Silver star sprinkles are nestled in that blue section bring just the right sparkle (and yes, tweezers make this part a breeze!).
The rest of the heart is a smooth white flood, striped with bold red lines. And here’s the cozy twist: the red lines aren’t perfectly spaced or straight. Intentionally imperfect, and oh-so-adorable. That was a big moment for me—embracing the beauty in the wonky! It’s a great reminder to newer decorators that perfection isn’t required to create something lovely & delicious.

A few decorating notes:
- I outlined and flooded the blue first, then immediately moved on to the white base. No waiting!
- Because both colors were still soft, they gently merged but didn’t bleed together. The result? A smooth, seamless look with soft edges.
- The red lines were piped on top once the base had set just a bit. You could make them as crisp or as playful as you like, I embrassed playful.
This design has a soft, welcoming charm that practically shouts summer celebration.
Watch It Come to Life!
Surprise! I thought this video had gone missing, but it turns out the beginner-friendly heart cookie did get its moment in the spotlight. This sweet step-by-step shows you exactly how I outlined, flooded, and added those charming details—perfect for decorating right along with me, especially if you’re just starting out or love a laid-back, forgiving design.

Design B: Royal Icing Details with a 3D Finish
Feeling ready for a slightly more advanced version? Design B adds more definition between the colors for a layered look that’s full of dimension.
These cookies use the same heart shape but break it down into three clear sections: blue for the base below the stars, white for the stripes, and red to finish it off. I used royal icing for everything—including the stars—so this one’s a little more technique-focused.

These patriotic cookies bring the spirit of
celebration—baked with love and a whole lot of freedom.
Here’s how I built this version:
- Start with the blue: Outline and flood the left third of the heart.
- Let it set slightly, then move on to the white stripe sections. Outline and flood just the areas that will remain white.
- Let those settle too, then come back for the red stripes, carefully outlining both and giving the lines a moment to crust over before filling.
Why all the waiting? It gives each section a nice clean finish and keeps the edges distinct, even when the colors touch. The result is beautifully rounded, gently raised sections that feel dimensional without getting bulky.
Instead of using sprinkles, I created tiny stars using royal icing. Okay, technically they’re little white hearts (made by piping two dots and dragging them with a scribe tool)—but nestled into the blue section, they look just like delicate stars.
Design C: Trio Stripe & Single Star
The second design has a cleaner look with three equal diagonal sections—one red, one white, and one blue. Each was outlined and flooded in order, allowing for a bit of set time between steps to maintain those crisp color lines.
The final flourish? A large white royal icing star piped right on top of the blue section. I used the classic “school notebook” method of outlining a star shape before flood filling. It sits proud and pretty, like the showstopper it is.

Tips for Sweet Success
Whether you go simple or more detailed, here are a few tips to help make your heart cookies shine:
- Let your icing rest overnight before using. This helps deepen the colors and smooth out air bubbles.
- If you’re decorating multiple cookies, cycle through them to give each step time to set slightly before layering on the next.
- Use a good pair of tweezers for placing sprinkles—precision tools make a big difference!
- Keep your outline and flood icings separate. And always save a little un-thinned icing in case your consistency needs a boost.
Oh—and if you’re wondering why there’s no decorating video for designs B & C, well… let’s just say it was a technical hiccup kind of day. I had my camera all set up and ready to go, but in the hustle of decorating and adjusting, I forgot to hit record. Oops! One of those moments that keeps us humble and human.
Don’t Have a Heart Cookie Cutter?
No heart-shaped cutter? No problem! Here are a few workarounds that’ll still get you fabulous flag-inspired cookies:
- Use a square cutter and outline a heart shape within it, embracing the negative space as part of the design.
- Roll out your dough and cut rectangles by hand using a knife or pizza cutter.
- Use edible markers to sketch a guide onto the cookie before piping your icing.
No matter how you slice it (or pipe it), you can still achieve that iconic heart-and-flag look.
