Need to Ripen Fruit … No Problem
Let’s Ripen Fruit
I know I have had instances where the need to ripen fruit was necessary. Have you ever made a beeline for your favorite fruit stand, hoping to snag some perfectly ripe fruit, only to find yourself staring at a pile of rock-hard peaches or strawberries? Yep, we’ve all been there. But don’t worry—ripening fruit at home is easier than you think! Let’s turn those underripe fruits into sweet, juicy perfection in no time.
So, you’ve brought home some less-than-ready-to-eat fruit. No big deal! First things first, give your fruit a good rinse and dry. Then, grab a brown paper bag, carefully toss in your fruit, and add a secret ripening weapon—an apple or a green tomato. Place the bag on your kitchen counter in a cool, dry spot out of direct sunlight, and let nature do its thing. This is what we did when preparing our Delicious Cinnamon Apple Crisp and Ultimate Peach Cobbler.

Here’s why it works: apples and green tomatoes release ethylene gas, which speeds up the ripening process. That means your peaches, avocados, or whatever you’re eager to enjoy will be ready to eat much faster.
Be sure to check on your fruit daily, or even twice a day, to monitor its progress. As soon as one piece reaches peak ripeness, pull it out and pop it into the fridge to keep it from over-ripening. Let the rest continue their ripening journey until they’re all as delicious as can be.

This tip is a lifesaver when you’re planning to make something special, like our irresistible Strawberry Pizza (you can find the recipe in Sparkle in the Kitchen). With this method, you’ll always have perfectly ripe fruit at your fingertips.

One last thing—avoid putting un-ripened fruit in the fridge, as it’ll put the brakes on the ripening process. The only exception? Bananas, but that’s a story for another day.
